About

‘Inspired by nature and its materials, I am guided intuitively, using emotional and sensory responses to create textured abstract mixed media paintings and tactile textile artefacts.’

Having spent a large part of my life stuck in the corporate world, I rekindled my passion for art four years ago as rehabilitation from long-term health issues. This has resulted in being awarded a BA(Hons) First in Creative Practice from the University of the West of Scotland. Pulling on life experience and theories of phenomenology and emplacement, I rely on instinctive behaviours and create directly in response to an environment by being within a space both physically and mentally. Based in south-west Scotland provides me with easy access to amazing landscapes which I walk in daily. Exploring a variety of different mediums and materials, I develop work until I find a way that satisfies my inner Self. ‘Every piece of work owns a piece of myself.’

Amongst many Artists I am inspired by the mixed media works of Barbara Rae who combines bold colour palettes with abstract shapes and mark making to reflect her intuitive responses to place. I am similarly inspired by the works of Maria Bartuszova who created fragile yet distinct vessels in response to experience of place and situation. This aligns with my own creative practice.

Recently I have been working with natural materials to create textural sensory pieces and garments exploring techniques to preserve the structure and integrity of found materials. The alchemist in me continues to investigate pigments and printing opportunities from a range of natural materials. The contact print process, in particular, requires sustained heat to produce a range of prints and pigments from local fauna. There are endless experimenting opportunities which often have surprising and illuminating results.
